Glossary for linear relationships
Function- a relation from a set of inputs to set a possible outputs where each input is related to exactly one output.
Math model: a description of the system using mathematical concepts and language
Slope: a rising falling surface
Additive inverse: additive inverse of a number a is the number that, when added to a, yields zero.
Multiplicative inverse: same thing as a reciprocal
Inverse variation: is a situation in which one quantity increases while another quantity decreases
Correlation Coefficient: a number between −1 and +1 calculated so as to represent the linear dependence of two variables or sets of data
Outlier: a data point that is distantly separate from the rest of the data
Residual: the difference between the observed y-value (from scatter plot) and the predicted y-value (from regression equation line)
Scatter Plot: A graph of plotted points that show the relationship between two sets of data
Standard deviation: a measure of how spread out the numbers are
Variance: It is the root mean square deviation and is also a measure of the spread of the data with respect to the mean
Categorical Variables: numbers in categories that are organized
acute triangle: triangle with all 3 angles less than 90 degrees.
cube root: the number that produces a given number when cubed
hypotenuse: longest side of a right triangle, opposite of a right angle
leg: either of the two sides that form the right triangle
obtuse triangle: triangle with angle greater than 90 degrees
pythagorean theorem: geometry among 3 sides of a right triangle
radius: straight line extending from the center of a circle of a sphere
right triangle: a triangle with an angle that is 90 degrees
square root: a number that produces when a number multiplies by itself
theorem: statement, formula in math deduced from other formulas
angle of rotation- Angle of rotation is the measure of degrees that a figure is rotated about a fixed point
base-the lowest part or edge of something, especially the part on which it rests or is supported
basic design element- a shape is defined as 2 or more dementional area that stands out
center of rotation-the point fixed to a body undergoing planar movement that has zero velocity at a particular instant of time
compound growth-specific term for the geometric progression ratio that provides a constant rate of return over the time period
congruent- identical in form
decay factor-the total value decreases but the proportion that leaves remains constant over time
decay rate- given period of time compared with the total number of atoms of the same kind present at the beginning of that period
dilation- a transformation (notation ) that produces an image that is the same shape as the original, but is a different size
expanded form- way to write numbers by adding the value of its digits
exponent- small number written with another big number that tells how many times to multiply the big number by itself
exponential form- a numeric form involving exponents
growth factor- the addend by which a quantity increases (or decreases) over time
growth rate- addend by which a quantity increases (or decreases) over time
line of symmetry- One half is the reflection of the other half
nth form- expression that will allow you to calculate the term that is in the nth position of the sequence
reflection- an image or shape as it would be seen in a mirror
rotation- rotating around an axis or center
scientific notation- writing or displaying numbers in terms of a decimal number between 1 and 10, multiplied by a power of 10
similar- having the same shape; having corresponding sides proportional and corresponding angles equal
standard form- way of writing down very large or very small numbers easily
symmetry- made up of exactly similar parts facing each other or around an axis
transformation- dramatic change in form or appearance
translation- function that moves an object a certain distance
